Our guides
Is Le Marais a good place to stay in Paris?
A fact-based answer on Le Marais as a base — 70 hotels, eight sub-districts, metro lines, Monday and Saturday closures, the traffic zone. Checked October 2026.
The short answer
Le Marais suits a visitor who plans to walk. The district is made of eight sub-districts in the 3rd and 4th arrondissements, and the 70 hotels in our base are all open and checked on 2 October 2026. They range from two one-star hotels to eight five-stars. Our list does not cover every bed in the district, only hotels registered with Atout France and checked against their own websites.
Where the answer turns into a no is narrow. A guest who needs a car park, guaranteed air conditioning or a district without Monday closures will find fewer options than the numbers suggest. The sections below give the evidence, then the exceptions.
What the 70 hotels look like
The 3rd arrondissement has 32 hotels in the base, and the 4th arrondissement has 38. By category the district holds 29 three-stars, 22 four-stars and eight five-stars, plus six two-stars, two one-stars and three hotels with no official category.

Facilities as the hotels declare them on their own sites:
- Air conditioning: 48 of 70. The rest do not mention it, or say outright that they have fans.
- Family, triple or communicating rooms: 44 of 70.
- A wheelchair-adapted room: 28 of 70.
- Pets accepted: 24 of 70.
- A spa: nine. A pool: four. A car park: four.
The last figure matters for anyone arriving by car. Like the rest of Paris Centre, most of the district is in the limited-traffic zone (ZTL): no through traffic by car, though taxis and ride-hailing cars may set down guests at the hotel. The two islands are outside it.

The Haut-Marais is the northern end, with galleries, concept stores and the Marché des Enfants-Rouges. Saint-Paul runs down towards the Seine, with the place du Marché-Sainte-Catherine and the Hôtel de Sully. Hôtel de Ville – Beaubourg, the western edge, lists the most lines once the RER is counted: five metro lines and three RER lines, through the Châtelet interchange. See also our guide to the Marais for the sights, and the pages on the 3rd and 4th arrondissements.
What can go wrong
These points are the reason a visit can disappoint, and each one is dated.
- Monday. The Picasso Museum, the Carnavalet, the Cognacq-Jay, the Arts et Métiers, the Museum of Hunting and Nature, the Museum of Jewish Art and History, the Maison de Victor Hugo and the Marché des Enfants-Rouges are all closed on Mondays. The National Archives museum is closed on Tuesdays instead.
- Saturday. In the rue des Rosiers, many kosher shops and businesses run by observant owners close from late Friday afternoon to Saturday evening. The Shoah Memorial is closed on Saturdays.
- The Centre Pompidou has been closed since 22 September 2025, and reopening is announced for 2030.
- The Village Saint-Paul is being renovated; its own site warns of scaffolding or altered passages. We read this on 2 October 2026.
- Sunday is the opposite problem: the rue des Rosiers is pedestrianised and crowded, but the BHV is listed as open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to directory listings, and the Village Saint-Paul’s shops and restaurants are open.
Which sub-district for which kind of stay
The count by category shows where the choice lies. Room counts are the figures each hotel gives; the median for the 70 hotels is 28 rooms.
| Sub-district | Hotels | By category | Median rooms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arts-et-Métiers | 18 | 1★: 1, 2★: 3, 3★: 6, 4★: 5, 5★: 2, unclassified: 1 | 39 |
| Saint-Paul | 16 | 1★: 1, 2★: 2, 3★: 9, 4★: 3, 5★: 1 | 23.5 |
| Hôtel de Ville – Beaubourg | 11 | 3★: 7, 4★: 2, 5★: 1, unclassified: 1 | 29 |
| Haut-Marais | 10 | 2★: 1, 3★: 2, 4★: 6, 5★: 1 | 24 |
| Place des Vosges | 4 | 3★: 1, 5★: 2, unclassified: 1 | 28.5 |
| Rue des Rosiers | 4 | 3★: 1, 4★: 2, 5★: 1 | 19.5 |
| Île Saint-Louis | 4 | 3★: 2, 4★: 2 | 21 |

Three readings follow. The Haut-Marais is the part of the district where four-star hotels dominate, six of its ten. Saint-Paul is the part where three-stars dominate, nine of sixteen, and it contains the largest hotel of the base, with 162 rooms. The place des Vosges has only four hotels, but two are five-star. For the pages that compare them, see the 3rd arrondissement and 4th arrondissement lists.
Getting in and moving around
The Marais has no RER station. For Charles de Gaulle, our data points to the RER B at Châtelet–Les Halles or Gare du Nord, then the metro; for Orly, line 14 at Châtelet or Gare de Lyon, then line 1. Châtelet is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the west of the district.
From the place des Vosges, our timetable calculation gives 17 minutes to the Louvre (a walk to Saint-Paul, then line 1), 19 minutes to Notre-Dame (the same walk, then line 1 to Hôtel de Ville) and 37.5 minutes to the Eiffel Tower (line 1 to Franklin D. Roosevelt, then line 9 to Iéna). From the rue de Bretagne, in the Haut-Marais, the Louvre takes 22.5 minutes and the Eiffel Tower 40. The Eiffel Tower is therefore the one landmark that the district does not put within easy reach; see Le Marais to the Eiffel Tower.
Sundays and evenings
Shops in the “Le Marais” tourist zone may open on Sundays, under a 2015 order: the zone covers the district east of the rue des Archives, the place des Vosges, the rue des Rosiers, the Village Saint-Paul and the rue Saint-Louis-en-l’Île. The BHV, to the west, belongs to the neighbouring “Les Halles” zone.
In the evening, the Wikipedia article on the district places the district’s LGBT+ community mainly around the rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie. The Île Saint-Louis is residential: 2,323 inhabitants on 11 hectares at 1 January 2016, according to Wikipedia. A visitor who wants a quiet end to the day will find it on the island or around the place des Vosges, one who wants bars will find them nearer the rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie. Our nightlife page and the gay Marais say which addresses we could verify.
Reading the hotel lists
To go from the district to a bedroom, use the lists by category and the lists by landmark. For the sub-districts, the hotel pages near the place des Vosges, the Hôtel de Ville and the rue des Rosiers group the hotels by walking distance. Cheap hotels in Le Marais and four-star hotels in Le Marais filter by category.
Which metro lines the hotels stand beside
Counting from the stations named on each hotel’s page, and not counting République, the number of hotels of our base with a station of the line within 300 m on foot is: line 1, 17 hotels; line 3, 15; line 11, 12; line 8, 11; line 4, 10; line 7, 9; line 5, 6; line 9, 5; line 14, 2. Twenty-two of the 70 hotels have no station within 300 m. Four more hotels stand within 300 m of République, where lines 3, 5, 9 and 11 still stop and line 8 trains do not until April 2027.
Line 1 therefore serves the largest number of hotels, which fits its position along the rue de Rivoli and the rue Saint-Antoine, and it is the line that reaches the Louvre in the 17 minutes given above. A visitor who needs line 8, the line towards Bastille and Balard, will find eleven hotels with a station close by, but should not plan on République for the moment.
Who it suits, and who should check twice
It suits visitors who want to reach three or four museums on foot, and who are content to use the metro for the rest. Distances are short: the Picasso Museum is 524 metres in a straight line from the place des Vosges, and the Centre Pompidou 1.2 km from it.

It needs more checking for guests in wheelchairs, because only 28 of the 70 hotels list an adapted room and several state that their building is not accessible. It also needs checking for anyone who wants guaranteed air conditioning in summer, or a hotel with a car park. For specific lists, see the luxury hotels of the district, the cheap hotels or the boutique hotels.
