Hotels Marais Paris

Le Marais is one of twelve areas of Paris where retail shops may open on Sundays: the « international tourist zones ». The Marais zone was created by an order of 25 September 2015. It means a shop may open, not that it must, and employees are covered by agreements with pay compensation. Evening work from 9 p.m. to midnight is for volunteers, paid double for that slot. Outside the zones, the mayor may authorise up to 12 Sundays a year.

What the zone covers

The Marais zone covers the district east of rue des Archives: the Archives quarter, the place des Vosges, rue des Rosiers, the north side of rue Saint-Antoine as far as rue de Fourcy, the Village Saint-Paul, the north-east of the Haut-Marais up to boulevard du Temple, and, on the Île Saint-Louis, rue Saint-Louis-en-l’Île and the streets that cross it, but not the quays. The order does not name rue de Bretagne itself, only the streets that cross it. The Square du Temple and the Carreau du Temple are not mentioned in the text.

West of rue des Archives, a neighbouring zone, « Les Halles », covers Beaubourg and Saint-Merri, and the BHV on the north side of rue de Rivoli. Neither zone covers the Arts-et-Métiers administrative quarter or the Île de la Cité. For a precise street, consult the City’s PDF map. Our Marais shopping page covers what to buy.

Two Sunday rules are worth keeping. The Bibliothèque historique de la Ville de Paris is closed on Sunday. The church of Saint-Paul–Saint-Louis is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on other days, but accepts no individual visit on Sunday morning, nor during services.

What closes, and what shifts

Outside the tourist zones, food shops may open on Sunday morning until 1 p.m., under the general rule of the labour code; the covered markets keep their own hours. Inside the Marais zone, the Village Saint-Paul keeps its shops and restaurants open on Sunday. The Hôtel de Sully’s bookshop opens at 1 p.m. on Sunday, not before.

On Sunday the street plan changes: rue des Rosiers is pedestrian, and our sources describe it as very busy. Because the Archives open at 2 p.m., the first half of our walking tour fits a Sunday morning and the Archives the afternoon. For what else is open, see things to do in Le Marais.

Metro for the Sunday addresses

The Sunday addresses sit on different sides of the district, so the line you choose matters.

  • Cour des Vosges, 116 m from the place des Vosges, lists Chemin Vert (line 8) at 350 m, 4 min on foot; Saint-Paul (line 1) at 400 m, 5 min on foot.
  • Boudoir des Muses, 180 m from the Picasso Museum, lists Saint-Sébastien–Froissart (line 8) at 500 m, 6 min on foot; Filles du Calvaire (line 8) at 550 m, 7 min on foot.
  • Hôtel Caron Le Marais, 67 m from the church of Saint-Paul–Saint-Louis, lists Saint-Paul (line 1) at 150 m, 2 min on foot; Sully-Morland (line 7) at 500 m, 6 min on foot.

Where to sleep

For a Saturday-night stay that puts you near the Sunday addresses, compare the hotels of the 4th arrondissement and hotels near the place des Vosges.
