A passage to the place des Vosges

From rue Saint-Antoine, the Hôtel de Sully opens onto a courtyard, a garden and an orangery that lead to the place des Vosges. Crossing the garden brings you under the arcades of the place des Vosges, from where you can go on to the Maison de Victor Hugo.

Guided visits

The interiors open only on occasional visits, announced on the official site. The first floor holds the Duchess’s apartment, « rarely open to the public ». Groups are limited to 18 people, at €13 (€6 reduced for ages 7 to 18).

The house and its builders

According to Wikipedia, the Hôtel de Sully, in Louis XIII style, was built between 1625 and 1630 by the architect Jean Androuet du Cerceau. Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully, bought it in 1634, and the family kept it until 1752. It has been a listed historic monument since 1862 and, since 1967, the headquarters of the Centre des monuments nationaux, which explains why the interiors are not open to the public. A restoration campaign between 1945 and 1974 restored the original terrace.

What to look at in the courtyard and garden

The main block stands between the courtyard and the garden. Its façades carry allegorical sculptures of the seasons and the elements, and two pavilions flank the entrance on the street. At the end of the garden, the orangery holds the passage to the place des Vosges; the garden has terraces. The bookshop opens at 1 p.m., so the courtyard is the only open space before that hour.

What is within three minutes

Figures are measured as the crow flies on our coordinates; times on foot apply the same factor of 1.3 and 80 metres a minute.

Place Straight line On foot
Church of Saint-Paul–Saint-Louis 148 m 2 min
Village Saint-Paul 164 m 3 min
Place des Vosges 167 m 3 min
Maison de Victor Hugo 183 m 3 min
Carnavalet Museum 300 m 5 min
Bibliothèque historique de la Ville de Paris 329 m 5 min
Rue des Rosiers 434 m 7 min

The passage makes the place des Vosges a 167 m crossing, which is shorter than going round by the street. Nineteen hotels of our base stand within 450 m. The Saint-Paul–Saint-Louis church and the Village Saint-Paul are the two nearest neighbours to the west; the Carnavalet Museum lies to the north-west. The walking tour passes between the Village Saint-Paul and the place des Vosges.

Timing

The courtyard and garden are open every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and closed on 1 January, 1 May, 1 and 11 November and 25 December. The bookshop closes on Monday. Because the guided visits of the interiors are booked in advance, with a maximum of 18 people, a visit that includes the apartments must be planned before the day.

What the site announces

The official site announces Paris Design Week 2026 from 10 September to 25 October 2026, and describes its bookshop as unique of its kind. It also advertises guided visits of the Duchess’s apartment, on the first floor, “rarely open to the public”. The site gives nothing on pets, picnics or access for reduced mobility, so ask the Centre des monuments nationaux before you come with a pushchair or a wheelchair; the garden, with its terraces, is the part where steps are most likely.

Getting there

Saint-Paul station (line 1) is about 220 m away; Sully – Morland (line 7) 350 m, Bastille (lines 1, 5 and 8) 380 m and Chemin Vert (line 8) 440 m. The official site names Saint-Paul or Bastille, and a cycle track runs along rue Saint-Antoine.
