The budget address of the Upper Marais
The Hôtel Américain is at no. 72 rue Charlot, in the Enfants-Rouges quarter of the 3rd arrondissement. Atout France, the agency that issues France’s official hotel stars, classified it two stars on 16 January 2023, for 36 rooms. Of the Upper Marais hotels in our base, it is the only one in that category and the only one we place in the lowest price band (€); the hotel’s website itself uses the words « hôtel pas cher ».
It is an independent business. The company that runs it, registered at the same address since 1968, is named in the legal notice as the sole operator, with no chain or network attached.
Rooms and services
The room that sets it apart is the quadruple: 20 m² for up to four guests, with two bathrooms, which the hotel offers to families. One room is adapted for guests with reduced mobility, and small dogs are admitted on request, for an extra fee.
The rest is kept simple. The website does not mention air conditioning and cites double glazing instead. Breakfast is served in a vaulted lounge with stone walls; there is no bar, only a lounge with drinks machines, and no restaurant. For a car, the hotel offers access to a neighbouring car park, charged separately.
Rue Charlot and the metro
Three stations are within four minutes on foot: Filles du Calvaire (line 8) is three minutes away, Oberkampf (lines 5 and 9) four, and République, where lines 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11 meet, four as well (line 8 trains do not stop there from 22 July 2026 to April 2027, because of works). The Marché des Enfants-Rouges is four minutes away, the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature nine and the Musée Picasso ten.
The street mixes categories. The five-star Maison Proust and the four-star 1K Paris are both two minutes away. The nearest three-star, the Hôtel du Vieux Saule, four minutes away, adds air conditioning and communicating rooms of 27 m². The nearest other two-star, the Hôtel Paris Bruxelles on rue Meslay, six minutes away, has 33 rooms, some for four people, and rents rooms by day.
