A royal site, a renamed house
Hôtel Charles V is at 20 rue Saint-Paul, one of the streets that enclose the courtyards of the Village Saint-Paul. The hotel places itself on the site of the hôtel Saint-Pol, the residence Charles V built here in the 14th century; the history of the Village Saint-Paul, documented independently, puts the whole quarter on those former royal grounds.
The building was previously the Hôtel du 7e Art. After a complete renovation it reopened in four stars under its current name, and Atout France, the body that classifies French hotels, confirmed that category on 11 October 2023 for 22 rooms. The hotel is independent, with no chain or group behind it according to its legal notice.
Rooms and facilities
The rooms follow a Gustavian palette of blue, grey and white, and all are air-conditioned. Two are adapted for guests with reduced mobility. The junior suite is the largest category and takes three people at most, so families of four will need two rooms.
For a hotel of this size the facilities go further than usual: a gym, a hammam open to guests from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and a bar serving from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. There is no restaurant and no spa in the sense of treatments. Small pets, under 10 kg, are welcome.
Saint-Paul on foot
The antique and design shops of the Village Saint-Paul are one minute from the door; its shops and restaurants open on Sundays, each with its own hours. The church of Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis and the Hôtel de Sully are three minutes away, and from the Sully garden a passage leads to the place des Vosges, six minutes away, which our guide to the place des Vosges describes. The Musée Carnavalet, free for its permanent collections, is seven minutes away.
The neighbourhood holds several hotels of different categories. Hôtel Saint-Louis Marais, a three-star of twelve rooms, is three minutes away, as is the two-star Pratic Hôtel on the rue d’Ormesson. The nearest four-star, Hôtel de JoBo (24 rooms, also on the rue d’Ormesson), is four minutes away.

Frequently asked questions
Hôtel Charles V review — is it worth four stars?
Four stars is the official category, awarded by Atout France on 11 October 2023. In practice that buys air conditioning, a gym, a guests-only hammam, a bar and two adapted rooms in a 22-room house. What it does not buy is a restaurant, spa treatments or a room for four. We do not grade hotels or reproduce guest reviews.
Was it the Hôtel du 7e Art?
Yes. The hotel says it used to be the Hôtel du 7e Art and was renamed Charles V when it reopened in four stars after a full renovation. Its website does not give the date of the change.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, if the animal weighs less than 10 kg, according to the hotel.
How do I get there from Charles de Gaulle airport?
Take RER B, without changing, to Châtelet-Les Halles, then metro line 1 to Saint-Paul, three minutes from the hotel. The single Paris Région–airports ticket covers the whole journey.
How much tourist tax will I pay?
In 2026, a four-star hotel in Paris collects €8.45 per adult per night. Minors are exempt.
