A house at the Bastille end of rue Saint-Antoine
The Herse d’Or is at no. 20 rue Saint-Antoine, at the eastern end of the street, about 250 metres from Bastille station. It is independent, according to its legal notice, with no chain or group. Atout France, the state agency that awards hotel stars, classified it three stars on 23 October 2023, for 29 rooms.
The hotel says it has received guests since 1790 and describes a house more than two hundred years old, with exposed beams and stone and several inner courtyards. No independent source we consulted confirms the date. What is documented is recent: a complete renovation finished in 2023.
Renovated rooms, contactless stays
The renovation brought air conditioning to the whole hotel and a lift, accessible to people with reduced mobility, that serves every level; no room is announced as adapted, however. Families can choose triples or communicating rooms. Dogs and cats are accepted, with a supplement shown on the website.
Arrival can be done without the front desk: a kiosk handles check-in and check-out, the room key works from a mobile phone, and each room has a tablet. There is no restaurant or bar on the list of services. Drivers will find a public car park about ten minutes away, on rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine.
Bastille, Vosges, Sully
The Maison de Victor Hugo is two minutes away, and the place des Vosges and the Hôtel de Sully three; our guide to the place des Vosges covers the square and its opening hours. The Village Saint-Paul is five minutes away, the church of Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis six.
The nearest hotel of the same category is the Hôtel Bastille Spéria, two minutes away at 1 rue de la Bastille: larger (42 rooms) and also air-conditioned, it too lists communicating rooms, plus two rooms equipped for hard-of-hearing guests. The three-star Castex is two minutes away too, and Hôtel Saint-Louis Marais, with only twelve rooms, four minutes away.
