A hotel built around a sweet shop

Maison Saintonge stands at no. 16 rue de Saintonge, in the Enfants-Rouges quarter of the 3rd arrondissement, at the northern end of the Marais. Atout France, the national tourism agency that grants official star ratings, classified it four stars on 7 July 2023, for 22 rooms. On our price scale that means the upper-middle band (€€€); we leave rates to the booking platforms.

The hotel’s signature is its reception desk, which is also a confectionery in the old style, where guests fill paper bags with sweets from makers across France, and the website presents the whole place as a boutique hôtel-confiserie.

Rooms, breakfast and the patio

Air conditioning is individual, according to the hotel’s room page, and a cot can be added free of charge.

There is no bar and no restaurant. Breakfast is the meal the hotel puts forward, sourced from a nearby organic bakery, the Paris roaster Lomi and the charcutier Gilles Verot, and room service runs from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Guests can also sit out in the patio.

What we could not find matters too. The website mentions no room adapted for reduced mobility, no pet policy and no family room, and the only parking it cites is the public Interparking at 132 rue du Temple.

Rue de Saintonge and its neighbours

The Marché des Enfants-Rouges is two minutes away, the Musée Picasso four and the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature five. Filles du Calvaire and Saint-Sébastien – Froissart, both on line 8, are about six minutes on foot; Oberkampf, on lines 5 and 9, about eight.

Three other four-star hotels lie within three minutes on foot. The Hôtel du Petit Moulin has 17 rooms decorated by the couturier Christian Lacroix, in a former bakery whose shopfront is a listed monument; the Boudoir des Muses has 28 rooms and two private spas, one of them with a pool; the Hôtel Suzie Blue has 31 rooms and a coffee shop open to the street. Maison Saintonge mentions neither a spa nor a café of that kind; it has the sweet counter and the patio. For families who need connected rooms, the three-star Hôtel du Vieux Saule is three minutes away on rue de Picardie.
