How to treat it as a visit
We cite the BHV as a landmark and as a department store for the home and DIY, not as a shopping stop not to be missed: at 2 October 2026 its offer was in flux, with a court decision expected on 30 October. For the quarter’s shops proper, see our guide to shopping in Le Marais, and for Sunday opening, Le Marais on Sunday. The store faces the Hôtel de Ville, which has its own hotels and walking times, and the Centre Pompidou, closed until 2030, is about 400 metres to the north-west.
A shop with a long history
Wikipedia dates the BHV to 1856. It was first nicknamed Bazar Napoléon, then named Bazar de l’Hôtel de Ville in 1860, a name that its position facing the city hall explains. The architect Auguste Roy added the Art Deco rotunda that can still be seen in a renovation of 1912–1913. The main store covers 38,000 m² over eight levels, according to the same article, with the do-it-yourself and paint departments in the basement and an urban farm on the roof. Marcel Duchamp is said to have bought the bottle rack of his famous readymade here in 1914.
Part of that surface is not in use today: as the sections above explain, the upper floors are partly empty while the new management reorganises the shop. Use the history as context for the façade and the street, not as a promise of what is on sale inside.
What is within a few minutes
The shop faces the Hôtel de Ville, 110 m away in a straight line. Distances are straight-line from the coordinates in our data; walking times use our rule of 1.3 times the straight line at 80 metres a minute.
| Place | Straight line | On foot |
|---|---|---|
| Hôtel de Ville | 110 m | 2 min |
| Shoah Memorial | 319 m | 5 min |
| Centre Pompidou (building) | 399 m | 6 min |
| Archives nationales | 414 m | 7 min |
| Rue des Rosiers | 429 m | 7 min |
| Museum of Jewish Art and History | 451 m | 7 min |
| Notre-Dame cathedral | 573 m | 9 min |
Check the store’s hours on its official site before combining it with the neighbours. The Shoah Memorial is open Sunday to Friday and closed on Saturday; the Archives nationales are closed on Tuesday and open at 2 p.m. at weekends; the rue des Rosiers is always open to walkers. The Centre Pompidou building is closed, so it works as a landmark only.
