Where it stands

Le Grand Mazarin occupies 17 rue de la Verrerie, at the corner with rue du Bourg-Tibourg, in the western Marais where the 4th arrondissement meets the Hôtel de Ville sector. It is the first urban address of the Maisons Pariente collection, and the Swedish designer Martin Brudnizki drew the interiors with French craft workshops.

Atout France gave it five stars on 6 October 2023; the MICHELIN Guide adds one Key. That puts it among the larger five-stars of the quarter, with 61 rooms.

The pool, the table, the rooms

The headline is the water. A heated pool, 8 metres long, lies in the basement under a fresco by Jacques Merle after Jean Cocteau; beside it come a jacuzzi, a hammam and a single treatment room. The wellness area is for residents only. Boubalé, the restaurant, and the cocktail bar welcome outside guests.

Families get more than usual: rooms and suites connect, and the hotel says they can be combined for up to ten people. Three rooms are adapted for guests with reduced mobility, though they are reached through the entrance at 6 rue des Archives. Air conditioning is listed, and small dogs are accepted for a supplement. The hotel’s website speaks of a building from the 14th century, but nothing backs the date, so we do not repeat it.

Getting around

Hôtel de Ville (lines 1 and 11) is three minutes away. Rambuteau (line 11) and Châtelet (lines 1, 4, 7, 11 and 14) both take about seven. The BHV Marais department store is barely 60 metres off; our BHV page explains the shop’s current state, which is changing.

Against the neighbours

Among five-stars close by, Hôtel Dupond-Smith has only eight rooms. The four-stars start with the Hôtel Bourg Tibourg, 24 rooms about 110 metres away, and the Hôtel Duo, 58 rooms at roughly 140 metres. Over at the place des Vosges, Le Pavillon de la Reine has 56 rooms and a jacuzzi but no pool, which is the clearest difference with the Mazarin.

Frequently asked questions

Does Le Grand Mazarin have a swimming pool?

Yes, a heated indoor pool 8 metres long, with a jacuzzi, a hammam and one treatment room. The hotel reserves the area for its guests. In this part of the Marais, Le Pavillon de la Reine has no pool at all.

Is the restaurant open to people who are not staying?

Boubalé and the cocktail bar are open to the public, according to the hotel’s own notes.

Are dogs allowed?

Small dogs are accepted for a supplement, according to the hotel.

What should a Le Grand Mazarin review take into account?

We give no scores. The facts to check are five stars from Atout France since 6 October 2023, 61 rooms, one MICHELIN Key, and the pool, hammam and jacuzzi.

Why does the hotel’s own history not appear here?

The website mentions a 14th-century building without any historical source behind it, so we leave the claim out.
